Travel Back in Time When You Visit Tryon Palace

If you’re searching for an exciting day trip from Emerald Isle, consider touring the expansive grounds of Tryon Palace. This massive historic site has been meticulously maintained as an exact replica of the former home of the British governors of North Carolina. Though the original building burned down in 1792, visitors can tour the rebuilt property and experience the palatial grandeur of 18th-century architecture. This family-friendly event is an excellent addition to your next getaway, so be sure to add it to your itinerary and book your stay with us today!

See Everything There Is to See at Tryon Palace

You could easily spend a day exploring the historic homes, gardens, and museum exhibits at Tryon Palace. While there’s no “right” way to visit, we have a couple of suggestions that might make planning your trip a little easier.

North Carolina History Center

Start your visit at the North Carolina History Center, where you’ll be able to purchase tickets and get a quick overview of the history of Tryon Palace. The One Day Pass, which is $20 for adults and $10 for youths, allows admission to all of the sites we’ve listed below. Within the center, you’ll find a kid-friendly play area (the Pepsi Family Center) that teaches the littlest visitors about life in 18th-century North Carolina. The history buffs in the group will enjoy exploring the Regional History Museum, the Duffy Exhibition Museum (which houses special exhibits), and Guion Gallery (which showcases gorgeous pieces of decorative art). Be sure to also stop by the gift shop for a fun souvenir and the Lawson Landing Cafe to enjoy a delicious breakfast, brunch, lunch, or snack!

Governor’s Palace

Without a doubt, touring the Governor’s Palace is the highlight of any park visit. After you’ve enjoyed the exhibits at the center, check the schedule for the upcoming tours. While you can visit the many sites on the grounds in any order, we suggest you head to the Governor’s Palace next and wait for the next tour. Each one takes about 45 minutes.

Gardens

If the weather is nice (which, let’s face it, it usually is in North Carolina!), we suggest you traverse the gardens next. This feature stretches over 16 acres and is styled after a classic 18th-century British garden.

Historic Buildings

There are four historic properties around the grounds where guests can enjoy a guided tour. Each home represents a different standard of living. You’ll find the more elegant accommodations that suited businessmen as well as more humble living quarters. These homes are open seasonally, so check their website before your visit!
