What Is an International Dark Sky Park?
The International Dark Sky Park Program, established in 2001, encourages communities worldwide to preserve dark sites through effective lighting policies and public education. Cape Lookout National Seashore, through a two-year application process supported by local partners such as the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum and Heritage Center, the Crystal Coast Stargazers, and the Carteret County Chamber of Commerce, has joined over 190 places in supporting dark sky advocacy and protect the night from light pollution. This certification involved upgrading light fixtures to meet dark-sky-friendly lighting requirements and developing a plan to maintain outdoor lighting, preserving the park’s dark skies for future generations.
Immerse Yourself in the Cape Lookout National Seashore
The Milky Way used to be a common sight in the night sky, but it’s now rarely seen due to light pollution. Discover the breathtaking beauty of the universe at Cape Lookout National Seashore, the first International Dark Sky Park along the Atlantic coast in the NPS. The park and its partners host astronomy programs where you can marvel at the stunning night skies and learn how to preserve them by reducing light pollution. You can access the park’s visitor center at the end of Harkers Island via four ferries or private vessels and be part of this extraordinary experience.
