Tour the Cape Lookout Lighthouse
First thing’s first: getting to the Cape Lookout Lighthouse. There are a couple of different options. The easiest way to get there is to take the ferry. While there isn’t a fee to get to the seashore, you will have to buy a ticket to go on the ferry. You can also choose to kayak or take your own boat from a launch site.
The highlight of the Cape Lookout National Seashore is definitely the lighthouse. Here’s a quick history lesson on the structure: it was built in 1859 and is known for its “checkered daymark,” the diamond pattern on the tower. It’s the only structure in the U.S. that features this pattern. You’ll never get lost with it in sight! The center of the black diamonds points north and south, while the center of the white diamonds points east and west.
Make sure you’re visiting from May to September when the lighthouse is open for climbing. The self-guided tours run from Wednesday to Sunday, starting at 9:45 a.m. and with the last tour beginning at 4:15 p.m. Tickets to the lighthouse are $8 for adults and $4 for children 12 and younger.
