So why Emerald Isle? If you’re traveling from D.C., you’ll want to stay somewhere that’s off the beaten trail. You’ll want somewhere that’s quiet, with a small-town charm and plenty of untouched beaches to explore. Emerald Isle is the perfect destination for a relaxing weekend.
Attend an Emerald Isle Festival
There’s plenty to celebrate on the Crystal Coast, and we take every opportunity to gather for a fun festival. These Emerald Isle events are a great opportunity to get to know the area, the culture, and the people a little better. There’s a festival for nearly every occasion, from welcoming the new year with the epic Crystal Coast Countdown to celebrating the importance of seafood, to the Eastern North Carolina Community at the N.C. Seafood Festival. For a full list of our favorite annual events, don’t forget to download our free Vacation Guide!
Have a Day of Family-Friendly Fun
There are plenty of great attractions perfect for families near Emerald Isle. One of our favorite spots is the Cape Lookout National Seashore. This seashore is only accessible by boat, but no worries; there are a couple of ferries that run daily trips to the park. Once you’re there, you can enjoy a picnic on the gorgeous undeveloped beaches or go on a horse-watching tour. You’ll be able to see the wild horses that roam the shores. Be sure to head to the Cape Lookout Lighthouse. This incredible structure was built in 1859 and is the only lighthouse in the United States that features the “checkered daymark” pattern. From May to September, you’ll be able to climb to the very top of the lighthouse.
Another great nearby attraction is the Pine Knoll Shores Aquarium. Located in the nearby town of Pine Knoll Shores, this aquarium features a wide variety of aquatic animals, from loggerhead turtles to otters. The tours at the Pine Knoll Shores Aquarium are outstanding. You can get a look at how the facility operates and cares for the animals with the “Behind the Scenes Tours” or even learn how to master the art of surf fishing in N.C. with the Fishing Fanatics tour. It also hosts great plenty of fun special events, so be sure to check the calendar before your visit so you don’t miss out!
